Care for Contact Lenses
If you don't properly clean, disinfect and store your contact lenses, you can get serious eye infections. You can take care of your contact lenses by following the steps below.

1. Clean/disinfect your lenses

This may go without saying, but no matter which type you choose, you will need to clean and maintain your lenses. This is important because cleaning and disinfecting your lenses helps remove dirt and irritants, including bacteria and fungi that can infect your eyes.

Clean and disinfect lenses every time they are removed by rinsing them and storing them in an approved contact lens solution.

To rinse the lenses, pour some clean contact solution into the palm of your hand. Dab the contact lens with the index finger in the solution in the palm of your hand.

Never reuse contact lens solutions. Clean your lens case daily and always use a fresh contact lens solution when removing lenses.

Do not use homemade cleaners. You should also avoid wetting or cleaning the lenses with saliva before use, as this can introduce bacteria into your eyes.

Do not use tap water to clean the lenses. Microorganisms can live in distilled water (including from taps), and while this water is safe to drink, it can be dangerous to leave water on your eyes with contact lenses.

2. Clean and replace the lens case

Proper care and maintenance of your contact lens case are as important as cleaning the contact lenses themselves. Dirt, bacteria, and fungus can build up in your case, so you need to know how to clean your case and how often to replace it.

Clean the lens case daily. Avoid soap; just rinse with hot water and spray with contact lens solution.

Always allow your lens case to air dry. Leaving your lens case wet all day encourages fungal growth, which can lead to infections and eye damage.

Change your contact lens case every three months.

3. Wear the lenses correctly

Although contact lenses are safe to wear, their continued safety depends on how you wear and store your lenses. Anything you introduce to contacts can end up in your eyes, which can cause irritation, pain, and even infection.

Always wash your hands with mild, unscented, non-cosmetic soap before handling contact lenses.

Dry your hands with a clean, lint-free towel before handling your lenses.

Keep your nails short and smooth to reduce the risk of damaging your lenses or scratching your eyes.

If you use hairspray, make sure to apply it before putting on your contact lenses. Always wash your hands after using/handling hairspray to prevent it from getting on your lenses.

If you wear makeup, put on contact lenses before applying makeup. Likewise, make sure to remove your contact lenses before removing your makeup at the end of the day.

Wear contact lenses only for the length of time and long-term duration recommended by your eye care professional.

Do not sleep with contact lenses on unless your eye care professional tells you it is safe to do so. Never wear contact lenses while swimming in any body of water, including swimming pools.

4. If you experience problems, seek medical help

Contact lenses generally do not cause any problems for most users, except for some discomfort when adjusting to wearing them; however, some people experience adverse symptoms, usually related to infection or underlying medical problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Sudden vision loss

Persistent blurred vision

Flash

Severe or prolonged pain

Signs of infection, including swelling, redness, or irritation
