The kids are full of energy and ready to run around, play hard, fall down and get back on their feet. Just as we give our children freedom, we teach them the importance of taking care of themselves and their possessions, whether they're crossing the street on their way to school, playing sports, or brushing their teeth before bed.
We think glasses should be considered in the same way. They are often forgotten or taken for granted in the chaos of children's play, often resulting in broken or damaged glasses.
This is usually due to physical activity, movement, not putting on and taking off the glasses properly, not putting the glasses in the case, or dirty glasses lenses that block vision, making them more prone to accidents.
We have to accept that accidents will always happen, however, changing glasses every few months can put a financial strain on parents. So you'll be glad to hear that there are ways to help prevent this common problem!
We've put together some key tips for all parents looking to extend the life of their
kids' glasses. Always remind them:
1. Keep your glasses clean
This is one of the easiest and most important things you can teach them. Children's glasses often accumulate smudges and dirt during school hours.
In addition to being unable to see the blackboard properly, dirty eyeglass lenses can also be more prone to accidents due to reduced visual clarity and depth perception. Cleaning your glasses daily will also allow you or your child to identify any permanent scratches on the lenses that may have previously been covered up.
Make sure your child always has a soft microfiber eyeglass cleaning cloth in their trunk. A small cleaning spray solution to use with a cloth is ideal. Or, you can even buy pre-moistened eyeglass cleaning wipes—perfect for your desk, locker, or nightstand.
2. Wear your glasses correctly
We've all committed the crime of succumbing to laziness and taking off our glasses with just one hand! Every time we did this, the side arm stretched and loosened at the hinge, making it a major cause of broken or damaged glasses.
Remind your child to hold on to one arm firmly with both hands and gently put on and take off the glasses to prolong their life.
3. Store their glasses in a box
Leaving glasses on a table, sofa, or scattered in their backpack or bed can seriously damage a child's glasses!
Always encourage them to put their glasses in their case when not in use to avoid dirt, debris, and scratches on the rough surfaces of the lenses. Also probably no one will sit or step on their glasses! The glasses case comes with every kid's glasses purchased and is small and easy to store at home and at school.
4. Avoid wearing glasses during physical activity
Try to have your child take off their glasses before engaging in any physical activity or sport to avoid any rough contact with them.
If they specifically need these glasses, consider using stronger polycarbonate eyeglass lenses with a scratch-resistant coating to prevent breakage.
You can also use professional sports goggles with straps to minimize impact or injury to your child and his glasses. Frame materials also vary –choose a durable acetate or metal frame with spring hinges on the side arms for movement and flexibility.
5. Never use glue to fix glasses
If you're wondering how to fix broken glasses - no! This seems like the best temporary solution, but using any type of glue to secure the glasses does more harm than good. Once it gets into the lens, the coating is damaged and needs to be replaced.
Always go to your optician for professional repairs as they will have enough tools and knowledge to assess the extent of the damage.
6. Keep a spare pair of glasses
This last tip is better for parents than kids! Since your child will inevitably wear glasses at one stage or the other, we always encourage you to invest in a spare pair of glasses for your child.
This is especially important for anyone with a high prescription whose child can't go long without glasses. Great for sorting out new glasses before ordering them.
Showing your kids these simple glasses tasks may change the way they treat glasses and how often you buy them new specs! If you are planning to buy new children's glasses, please
