Adjusting your
glasses at home may be easier than you think if your frames don't fit. You can fix the most common frame problems yourself, but sometimes taking your glasses to an optician is the best thing to do.
Of course, if your problem is with your lenses, that's something you can't usually fix at home.
Here are four common eyeglass frame problems and how to fix them:
Problem 1: Your glasses are crooked
If one side of your frame appears taller than the other, you'll need to adjust the arms of your glasses - the part of the frame that hangs behind your ear.
If the right side is higher than the left side: Gently bend the left arm at the hinge or where the arm of the glasses bends behind the ear.
If the left side is higher than the right side: Gently bend the right arm at the hinge or where the arm of the glasses bends behind the ear.
Helpful hints:
Adjust the frame a little at a time to avoid overcompensating and possibly damaging your glasses.
Run the glasses arms in warm water to make them easier to adjust. Only use warm water from the tap. Do not use boiling water!
Avoid running warm water over the lenses as it can affect the lens coating.
Problem 2: Your glasses are pinching your nose
Not only are glasses that pinch your nose uncomfortable, but prolonged stress can also cause headaches or migraines. How you solve this depends on your frame material.
If you wear metal frames: Simply widen the plastic nose pads with your thumbs until the frame fits snugly.
If you wear plastic frames: After soaking the arms in warm water for 30-60 seconds, gently press the ends of the arms up and out for a more relaxed fit.
Helpful tip: If your glasses still pinch your nose after adjusting, seek help from a professional optician.
Problem 3: Your glasses slip off your nose
It's annoying to constantly push the glasses up because they slip on the nose, but it's easy to screw on the glasses.
If you have a metal frame: Use your thumb to shrink the nose pads until the frame no longer slides.
If you have plastic frames: Soak the arms in warm water for 30-60 seconds, then apply gentle downward and inward pressure on the ends of the arms. This allows for a better fit behind the ear, tightening the overall fit and preventing slipping.
Helpful tip: Summer is prime time for glasses and sunglasses to slide down your nose. If tightening the frame doesn't work, try using eyeglass wax to stop sliding.
Problem 4: Your glasses are too loose or too tight on your temples
If your frame is too tight on your temples, your glasses will feel very uncomfortable. On the other hand, if your frame is too loose, it will look and feel a little awkward.
Either way, you can adjust your frame at home for a more comfortable fit:
If the eyeglass arms are squeezing the temples: For metal frames, use your non-dominant hand to hold the eyeglass lenses. Using your dominant hand, gently press outward on the corner of the frame between the arm hinge and the lens. Repeat this on the other side of the frame for a more loose fit around the temples.
If the temples are too loose at your temples: Again, for metal frames only, use the same method as loosening the temples, except gently press inward on the corners of the frame between the temple hinges and the lenses. Repeat on the other side to tighten the fit around the temple.
Helpful tip: Adjusting the temples of rimless, semi-rim, or plastic frames can damage them. It is recommended that you take these types of frames to an optician for adjustment.
When to take your glasses to the pros?
If your frames are made of certain materials that are difficult to adjust, it is best to have your glasses fixed by a professional. These materials include frames made of aluminum alloys, titanium or memory titanium, and memory plastics. If you want to buy new glasses, please
