2. Use a clean microfiber cloth
Do not backfire, clean with a dirty cloth! Using a clean cloth not only avoids transferring dirt and other residues, but it also greatly reduces the risk of scratching your lenses when wiping off your eyeglass cleaner.
3. Spray both sides of each lens with eyeglass cleaner
It's best to use the spray that comes with your glasses when you buy them. A sunglass-specific spray will protect any additional coatings on the lenses. Try spraying from a distance that evenly covers the lens so that no solution builds up to form a smudge when you wipe.
4. Hold each lens with a microfiber cloth (made for eyeglasses)
Apply a little pressure lightly. Wipe back and forth in a circular motion to reduce lines and smudges.
Method 2: Wash the lenses with soap and water
1. Run the lens in warm water
Make sure the water is warm enough to touch - lukewarm or room temperature water is ideal. Running the glasses underwater that is too hot can damage any coatings the lenses may have.
2. Put a small drop of dish soap on each side of the lens
Using your index finger and thumb, lightly apply the soap in circular motions. Wipe so that the soap evenly coats each lens.
3. Rinse the lens again to remove soap
Just let running water remove the soap - don't wipe it off with your fingers. Doing so will leave smudges on the lens, and if there is still dust or debris on the lens, you may scratch the lens.
4. Raise the glasses
Look through the lens for a light source (preferably natural light) to check for any potential residue from the soap or the dirt you originally intended to clean. You should only see water droplets on the lens.
5. Allow the lenses to air dry or shake off the water gently
Avoid wiping the water off with any paper towel or kitchen cloth. Choose a clean microfiber cloth. If using a tissue, do not rub the lenses. Instead, dab any remaining water droplets and let the paper absorb them. This is done to avoid watermarks.
If you don't have a microfiber cloth, use a clean cotton cloth. Crucially, an alternative to a microfiber cloth is a clean cotton cloth. Any other material may present a risk of severely scratching the lens!
Any cloth that has been treated with fabric softener is not a good idea as it will often leave stains.
Method 3: Make your own lens cleaning solution
1. Mix some rubbing alcohol and water
Cleaning your glasses with rubbing alcohol is a safe method without removing finishes, such as anti-glare coatings.
For each part of water mixed, add three parts of alcohol.
Make as many as you want and keep them in a small spray bottle for future use.
Spray and wipe with a clean cotton cloth in circular motions.
2. After wiping the lenses, add a drop or two of dish soap to any mixture to improve clarity
This is the same as cleaning your lenses with dish soap under running water. Add a little soap to a bottle of ready-made diluted alcohol for ultimate clarity.
3. Avoid adding other household cleaning products, such as window cleaners
These chemicals are too hard for the lenses, there is a risk of damage and expensive repairs (ie coating replacements). As convenient as they look, don't add them to any cleaning solution you plan to make.
