How to Clean Eyeglass Frames?

time2022/06/28

Most eyeglass frames are made of plastic or metal, so they are easy to clean with basic dish soap. You can also deep clean the nose pads or polish the frame if they look cloudy. Read on for detailed cleaning steps.

When you buy glasses, your optometrist may tell you the importance of keeping your glasses clean. They might even show you how to care for your lenses, but you should also learn how to care for your frames. Most eyeglass frames are made of plastic or metal, so they are easy to clean with basic dish soap. You can also deep clean the nose pads or polish the frame if they look cloudy.

Method 1: Cleaning the glasses frames

1. Wash your hands with soap and water.

If you have dirt, lotion, or natural oils on your hands, you will transfer them to your eyeglass frames. Tiny dirt particles can even scratch your frames and lenses. To prevent this from happening, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Then, rinse your hands and dry them.

Choose a non-moisturizing soap to wash your hands. Moisturizing soaps contain oils or lotions that can get on your frames and lenses.

2. Rinse the glasses with warm water and put a drop of dishwashing liquid on each lens.

Running your glasses underwater can remove dust from the frame and lens surfaces. After the glasses are wet, spray a drop of alkaline detergent on each lens.

Avoid moisturizing cleansers, which can leave a greasy or greasy residue.

3. Rub the soap on the lenses and frames with your fingers.

Gently massage the soap on the frame to create a lather. Rub this foam on both sides of the frame. Take a little extra time to clean around the bridge of your nose, as it can be greasy.

TIP: If you have dust or dirt on your hinges, fold the frame up to expose the hinges. Dab the soapy water around the hinge with your fingers or an old toothbrush.

4. Rinse the glasses with warm water.

Run the frame under warm water to rinse off soap and dirt. Remember to fold the sides of the frame to flush the hinges.

When doing this, rinse your hands thoroughly so that the clean frame does not get soapy again.

5. Dry the glasses with a clean cloth.

Take a soft fabric or microfiber cloth and rub lightly over the frame and lenses. Avoid paper towels as they may scratch your glasses or leave tiny fibers behind.

Clean the frames every time you clean your glasses. Try to do this at least once a day.

Method 2: Clean dirty nose pads

1. Soak the toothbrush in soapy water.

To make a soap solution, spray a drop of alkaline liquid soap into a small bowl or plate. Pour about 1/4 cup (59ml) of warm water and scrub with an old toothbrush in the container to make a foaming solution.

Try brushes with soft bristles as they are gentler on nose pads.

2. Brush the entire nose pad with a soapy toothbrush to remove dirt and grime.

Gently wipe the sides of each nose pad with a toothbrush. If your nose pads have wires connecting them to the bridges of the frame, take extra care to scrub them.

Do not rub the lens with a toothbrush, as the brush will scratch the lens.

3. Rinse the nose pads with water, then dry them completely with a soft cloth.

Run the nose pads under warm running water to rinse off the soap and sticky substances. Then, pat the nose pads dry with a clean cloth. Allow the nose pads to air dry before putting on the frames so you don't build up moisture between the nose pads and your nose.

To speed up drying time, spray the pads with condensed air until they are dry.

4. If you cannot clean the nose pads, ask a professional to clean the frame.

If you can't seem to remove the green buildup completely, or if your nose pads still smell bad even after cleaning, take them to your optometrist for a professional cleaning. Most optometrist offices do not charge for express cleaning.

Method 3: Polishing the plastic frame

1. Apply a coin-sized amount of polish or oil to a soft cloth.

Take out your plastic frames that look dull or covered in a white film and place them on the countertop. Take a clean, soft cloth and spray a coin-sized amount of furniture polish or all-purpose oil on it.

Tip: Don't use paper towels as they can leave fluff on the frame. You can use cotton or microfiber cloth instead.

2. Wipe the cloth on the plastic frame.

Use gentle pressure to rub the polish or oil onto the surface of the frame. Continue moving the fabric so that it covers the front, back, and sides of the frame.

If your frame is covered in a milky white film, this is normal wear and tear and you may need to apply additional varnish or oil until the white discoloration disappears.

3. Let the polish or oil sit on the frame for 2 to 3 minutes.

This gives the polish or oil a chance to penetrate deep into the plastic, allowing the polish to last longer. If you use all-purpose lube, it will seep into the hinges, making them more prone to flexing.

If you're in a hurry, you can skip this step, but your frame may not be as glossy.

4. Wipe the frame with a dry cloth to remove residue.

Take a soft, completely clean cloth and gently wipe the entire surface of the frame. Continue to rub to absorb excess oil or polish so it doesn't fall into your hands when you touch the frame.
