5 Tips for Choosing Glasses for Your Child

time2022/04/06

Parents sometimes have confusion and doubts about what are the best glasses for their children and what characteristics they should have. To address some of these concerns, we've detailed the following 5 tips to consider when choosing glasses for children.

Many times, children are unaware of their vision problems. Therefore, it is important to have an annual eye exam to detect and address these visual abnormalities in a timely manner. It's especially important to get a vision test if your child has headaches, is disinterested, mixes up letters, follows lines with fingers while reading, or blinks a lot.

If some type of refractive problem is discovered after the exam, glasses will be needed. Parents are sometimes confused and skeptical about what are the best glasses for their child, what features they should have, what frame should be, or what type of lens would be the best fit. To address some of these concerns, we've detailed the following 5 tips to consider when choosing children's eyewear.

1. Choose the right size frame

The frame must fit the child's face and cover their field of vision perfectly. Glasses can't be wider than your face or go beyond your eyebrows, so buying larger glasses is not recommended. It should also be remembered that the central part of the lens should be adjusted to the center of the pupil.

2. The frame must be made of light, comfortable and safe materials

The choice of material depends largely on the age of the child. Therefore, for babies or children under the age of 5 or 6, silicone frames are more recommended as they are lighter and stronger, so they can better withstand twisting and breaking. Materials such as acetate, available from age 6, provide abrasion resistance in addition to better concealing the thickness of the lenses. Another option is metal or titanium glasses, which are lightweight and hypoallergenic.

3. The glasses frame should fit well on the nose

The nose pads of the glasses, the arches between the two lenses, must rest properly on the nose. At that age, the bridge of a child's nose is still not well-defined, so some glasses may slide off the face and/or sit too low on the nose, causing them to end up looking at the lenses. Therefore, it is recommended to choose full-bridge, low bridge, or baby inverted bridge glasses.

4. The temples must have the right length

To be comfortable for a child to wear, the temples must be adjustable, flexible, have a length that fits their structure and, if possible, have soft tips. This will prevent them from pressing on the temple or leaving marks on the temple. Also, to prevent them from falling while playing or exercising, it is recommended to wear a strap or use "temple stoppers," an accessory that helps keep the temples in place behind the ears.

5. Lenses must be organic materials

It is important that the lenses are made of an organic material, preferably polycarbonate, as it is more resistant to breakage than other materials. They must also include an anti-scratch treatment to provide greater scratch resistance and an anti-reflective coating to eliminate reflections.

All children should have an eye exam during childhood. When they are young, they can't tell if they have vision problems, and this test can detect correctable refractive defects that can negatively impact a child's visual development and help prevent vision loss Academic difficulties that may result from correction.

Some problems, such as strabismus or amblyopia (lazy eye), can be treated in infants and young children, but are irreversible once they grow up. Therefore, if you suspect that your child has poor vision or is affecting his vision when reading, it is important to have them undergo an eye exam to detect or rule out vision problems (such as nearsightedness or farsightedness) and correct them with prescription glasses if necessary.

The above introduces several tips for choosing children's glasses, I hope they can help you. If you are planning to choose children's glasses for your child, please contact us.
